How to get there:
Our trip begins at ‘Tropical Hotel’ which is situated in the city of Manaus. We will go up the Negro river and the trip takes between 2 ½ hours depends on the weater.
The Amazon river will change his name from his spring until he arrives to Brazil and will be called ‘Solimões river’ This meeting of the Solimões and the Negro river makes one of the most greatest phenomenon in the world, ‘the meeting of the waters’, which take place near Manaus. In this place the Amazon river won his permanent neme.
The Negro river Starts in Colômbia and runs 1.500 km until it arrives the meeting of the water. In the porto f our departure, at Tropical Hotel, the river hás about 9kms bewteen the 2 banks, but the much wider point has 16 km. The pH is extremely acid, about 4.5º. When the river raises it floods the banks and when it falls down it manages to drag with it dead organic materials such as dry leaves, fallen trunks etc. This material stays in the water, and with the heat it starts to decompose, releasing a substance called ‘acid tonic’ that gives the river its black color. Some advantages of this acidity reflects the low existence of mosquitoes, besides the beaches that have very fine and white sand.
The Solimões river Therefore, born in the Andes mountains in Peru, 5,000 meters altitude, starting from a hole just 26 cm of diameter, that spurts out water to the Apurimaque lake. Here starts the route of 4.600 km.
The meeting of the waters The different pH, temperature and velocity are the things that causes that both river water don’t mix during 11 km. In the end, due to it´s superior density, the water that pré-dominate is the muddy water deriving from the Solimões river.
